When I first joined NEIR they already had installed a token-ring network inside the main office, but wanted to expand onto the work site. The problem was that the work site was detached from the main office and so the buildings had different earth voltages.

 

After some investigation, I found that it was possible to link the buildings via fibre optics using the ring-in and ring-out ports on the MAU. Using fibre optics also removed the problem of covering a large distance, so the positioning of the secondary MAU was centralized within the work site.
